Press One For English

Happy July 4th. As our Nation struggles with Illegal's coming to the US during this Holiday, maybe this song sums up the way many of us feel. Welcome...but adapt.

My parents didn't expect any one to go out of their way when they came here from Germany legally in the early 1900s. They learned English from others they worked with and took some adult classes.

There was nothing written in German to pass tests or vote, or in business.

If you don't speak English, you are handicapped to succeed inevery group of people except those who are also handicapped. Non-English speaking people will be doomed to poverty and dependence on others. It is also a contributing factor to crime just to survive. It's not an easy language but it will be worth it in the long run.

Welcome to America! As a "visitor" you have came here to enjoy the opportunities and freedoms that make the USA the best country in the world! (Otherwise why would you be here?) Having a common language - -English - - has allowed this country to prosper and become the best in the world. Feel free to pass on your customs, heritage, and language to your children and their children. Now just do your part and step up learn English. This common language brings us together rather than dividing us.

If we went to a foreign country would they take us by the hand, learn our language, post everything in English, bend over backwards to accomadate us? I think not. Then why do we do that when people from non English speaking countries come to the USA? Are businesses afraid we will offend them and lose their pesos? Are we so politically correct we are afraid to stand up and say what is right? Since when did saying the truth make anyone a racist? We need to wake up and say what is true and not worry about who we offend. The song had it right, you are welcome to come here but learn to speak our language.

This is hilarious - as an expat living in Switzerland who are the worst culprits for not bothering to learn German ...in fact refusing to speak anything but English?

Yep, you got it the Americans. Maybe they should take some of their own advice. I intend to post a link to this video on every expatriate website I can find.

Thank you :-)

Just curious, Krissy

Are you talking about Americans who move to Switzerland or those visiting? If I were moving there I would completely expect to learn German which would make life so much easier. Are all the signs there in both languages?

I was talking about Americans who move to Switzerland.

I wonder why it is thought there should be one rule for people moving to your country and another for Americans who enjoy the hospitality of another?

Your expats are a poor advertisment for you, all they do is moan loudly in English (which by the way 90% of Swiss understand)about how terrible Switzerland is ???? leaving people wondering why they dont just go home.

No, road signs here are in German - it would be simply dangerous to have the many languages spoken here on one sign. Could you imagine trying to decide if you need to take an exit and having to read through messages in German, Italian, French, Italian, Ugoslavian, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, English, Chinese...

However the packaging on all our products is in German, French and Italian and English will soon be added to the list.

Most people here speak at least 3 languages, letting us celebrate the diversity that is Europe.

It seems to me that that the redneck people singing in this blog are living in the past if they expect people in a landmass the size of America to all speak English. It seems transport has enabled people to actually travel since the video clips used in their video.

By the way here you dial

1 for German
2 for French
3 for Italian and
4 for English

Time for America move out of the past, you are just another multi cultural country and you are going to have to get used to it.

...and this is my last word on the matter. :-)
